In my view, the notion of “expert” must be
viewed not so much as a destination reached, but rather, an
expert is one who continually seeks knowledge and skills,
and contributes willingly to a larger vision or goal.
Those who would be leaders must seek out expertise.
The journey
requires openness and reflection. To become an expert
in any field, experimentation is required, as well as an
abiding belief or faith in creating something of great value
to benefit the whole. Wendell Berry wrote: “Be
like the fox who makes more tracks than necessary, some in
the wrong direction.” Navigating toward any success requires
flexibility, and an ability to reflect on what may be a
better approach, as well as the capacity to build on
successes in order to create sustainable growth over time.

A project I am
particularly proud of directly put to use ideas explored in the St.
John’s University Educational Planning doctoral course taught
by Professor Kevin McGuire. Professor McGuire shared with us the
research based Wallace Foundation’s Nine Strategies for the
Fastest Improving Districts. As the Staff Development Lead
Teacher for Southampton Schools, I used this research as a
lens and a jump off point for our conversations surrounding our
Professional Development Plan (see link). All staff was part of the
process via Curriculum Council, department meetings and grade level
meetings. These meetings were held as forums for Wallace
discussion and reflection related to the strategies, professional
development goals, and overall Professional Development Plan. We
also carefully examined the overarching District Goals as part of
the five-year plan, particularly in the area of technology, in order
to be sure the Professional Development Plan incorporates the
support necessary to meet these goals. The goal of the district is
that this document will remain comprehensive, timely and thrive as
an evolving and ever-improving plan of action. I believe this
project exemplifies my goal of becoming an “expert” in the area of
educational and curriculum planning. Feel free to browse the other
links to see some of the work that illustrates what I have done in
my various roles as a doctoral student and educator.
